The challenge

Tonic started working with Stelling’s Head of Architecture in 2017. We had been referred to the business from another one of our modular clients. Stelling looked to us to help them in several business crucial hires as they already understood that we had the knowledge and expertise to hire within offsite construction.

Like many modular businesses in recent years, Stelling was going fast and needed the following roles placed: Head of Product Development Associate Technologist, BOM specialist, Several Mechanical Engineers.

Each role had its differences. Stelling granted these roles on an exclusive agreement that allowed us to make sure we looked at these vacancies without a one size fits all approach.

The Head of Product Development and Associate Technologist required a headhunting and networking approach. For the BOM Specialist and Mechanical Engineers, we were able to utilize our extensive AEC network coupled with industry referrals.

The niche skills and industry experience required across the AEC industry have always proved challenging. This was magnified by this client’s rural location so we knew sourcing processionals close to the business was an immediate challenge. The site was a problem as 90 to 95% of the people that were technically a good fit were not able or prepared to commute to the location. In addition, two of the positions were of a critical business nature and required in a short timescale.

The solution

We conducted an extremely thorough search leveraging Tonic’s formidable reputation in sustainable construction and modular globally. We not only looked in the local area but conducted a nationwide search. By approaching a bigger pool of suitable candidates, we were able to find people who were willing to work in this location.

The result

From the offset, we worked tirelessly to develop a full understanding of the role requirements, culture, and processes.

By following Tonic’s extensive resourcing process, we placed four high-level candidates with our client within 12 weeks. Both the MD and Technical Director were thrilled with the service and quality we delivered. Due to the proven value, we added, our client granted Tonic sole supplier status for the technical team.

In particular, the client was impressed with our ability to think outside of the box to identify and attract transferable skills from other manufacturing sectors such as shipbuilding for the product development role and defense manufacturing for the BOM role.

The culture fit was also delivered above expectations with the hires identifying with the brief to be innovative and flexible with outstanding stakeholder management skills.
