Assisting in rapid growth of a new division for Legal and General Modular Homes

Client: Legal & General

About: Legal & General invested in Europe’s largest modular manufacturing facility in Sherburn in Elmet, close to Leeds and York. We began working with Legal & General Modular Homes six months after their design team formation in 2018, growing the design team exponentially since.

Roles: Multiple roles in the technical design team including Architects, Architectural Technologists, BIM Technicians, Structural Engineers, Product Development Engineers, and M&E Engineers.

Sector: Sustainable construction

The brief

Legal & General started their modular homes division in 2016. L&G has had a housebuilding division that has been established for several years that is now on track to become the 2nd largest UK housebuilder within the next five years. The organization formed the modular division with similar ambitions with plans to build several UK-wide factories and increase their output to 10,000 modules (3,300 homes) per year before expanding overseas.

Tonic joined this process at the very early stages of the company’s development, with the technical design team only being formed a matter of months earlier. We initially started working with them to grow their architecture division. Tonic worked closely with L&G’s internal talent team to place several candidates that exceed expectations.

The challenges

Legal and General were growing at a breakneck pace. They were using several recruitment agencies to aid this growth; however, this caused problems in promoting this exceptionally well-known UK organization’s consistent brand image.

The company needed to bring in staff fast. Tonic’s task was to deliver on this but also mitigate the many issues that relate to rapid growth periods. We needed to source employees that would go the extra mile. Professionals that we found would be joining a large company yet a business that was still essentially a start-up. The mission was to hire the right caliber of personality that would make the business drive forwards at this critical stage.

“What makes Tonic stand out is their ability to think outside of the box which is important in our unique modular environment.”

The solution

Tonic continued to work in close partnership with both the internal recruitment team and the hiring managers. Working as L&G’s consultancy partner, we paid equal, if not more, emphasis on finding the right personalities as the skillsets.

Tonic consistently communicated this message to the market, and during 2019, we placed many professionals, including Architects, Architectural Technologists, BIM Technicians, Structural Engineers, Product Development Engineers, and M&E Engineers, as well as several other niche engineering and construction vacancies.

“We conduct assessments of the candidates “recruitment journey” which have shown that Tonic communicate our brand message effectively, keep candidates well informed throughout the two/three-stage interview process and attract people who would not have otherwise considered applying.”

The results

We act as the eyes and ears of the company. Tonic continues to develop hard-to-find skills into the team in addition to providing in-depth market insights.

Legal and General were delighted with the service and results that Tonic delivered. In October 2019, L&G appointed Tonic their sole tier one recruitment supplier. Having this agreement has allowed us to work even closer with the organization. We invest time in continuous improvement of processes and look at recruitment in a pragmatic and planned nature.

“Tonic has displayed consistent hard work and it is clear that they are passionate about and enjoy representing our brand.”
